Navigating the UK Cyber Security Job Market

Navigating the UK Cyber Security Job Market and Growing Your Career

Skills Gaps, AI Growth and Opportunities in the Cyber Workforce

The UK cyber security sector remains one of the fastest-growing areas of the digital economy. According to the Cyber Security Skills in the UK Labour Market 2025 report, over 143,000 professionals are now employed in cyber roles – a 5% increase from the previous year.

Yet, the workforce gap persists, with an estimated shortfall of 3,800 professionals, down from 11,100 in 2023.

Despite this progress, 49% of UK businesses report basic cyber skills gaps, and 30% face challenges in advanced areas like incident response, penetration testing, and cloud security.

AI Skills Are the New Frontier

AI is reshaping the cyber landscape. Over half of cyber firms (53%) now use AI in daily operations, and 65% expect demand for AI-related skills to grow in the next 12 months. However, only 42% have provided AI training to their teams, highlighting a new and urgent skills gap.

CyberLab’s own services reflect this shift, with increased demand for AI-aware penetration testers, SOC analysts, and threat hunters trained to detect AI-driven attacks.

Gender Diversity Still Lags

Women make up just 17% of the cyber workforce, and only 12% hold senior roles – a drop from previous years and far below the wider UK workforce average of 48% female representation.

This highlights the need for inclusive hiring practices and leadership development programmes.

Job Market Trends

In 2024, there were 32,370 core cyber job postings, a 33% decrease from the previous year. While this suggests market stabilisation, 28% of cyber firms still report internal technical skills gaps, and 37% of vacancies are considered hard to fill.

Roles in highest demand include:

  • Penetration testers (especially CREST and CHECK-certified)
  • Cloud security engineers
  • AI and machine learning specialists
  • Incident response analysts
  • Security consultants

Conclusion

The UK cyber job market in 2025 is dynamic, competitive, and increasingly shaped by AI. While the skills gap is narrowing, challenges remain in diversity, training, and advanced capabilities.

Organisations must invest in continuous learning, and professionals must stay agile to thrive in this evolving field.

CyberLab Sponsor World's Toughest Row

CyberLab Sponsors The Entrepreneur Ship in The World’s Toughest Row

Across the Atlantic

We were thrilled to support Cheshire adventurers Will Lomas and Adam Hardman as they took on The World’s Toughest Row 2024. Over the course of 47 days, they rowed more than 3,000 miles across the Atlantic Ocean, completing this incredible challenge and raising funds for UnLtd, a UK charity that supports social entrepreneurs.

Throughout their journey, Will and Adam’s unwavering determination and resilience were truly inspiring. Their commitment to completing the race and raising vital funds for UnLtd has made a significant impact, helping to further the charity’s mission of supporting social entrepreneurs.

This challenge was not only physically demanding but also mentally taxing. Will and Adam endured harsh conditions, from unpredictable weather to the constant mental strain of being out at sea for weeks on end. Despite the difficulties, their teamwork and drive saw them through to the finish line, and we couldn’t be prouder to have supported them.

We’d like to extend our heartfelt congratulations to Will and Adam on their remarkable achievement and thank everyone who supported their cause. Their journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the spirit of adventure.

“We were delighted to support The Entrepreneur Ship in The World’s Toughest Row 2024 as Will and Adam embarked on this challenge.

We were proud to support them both in the challenge and in their chosen charity, UnLtd, which supports and funds social entrepreneurs creating solutions to improve society.

We followed their journey across the Atlantic Ocean and celebrated their success when they crossed the finish line.”

– David Pollock, Chairman at CyberLab

The World’s Toughest Row proved to be a thrilling spectacle. It was a challenge that took Will and Adam more than 3,000 miles west from San Sebastian in La Gomera, Canary Islands, Spain, to Nelson’s Dockyard, English Harbour, Antigua and Barbuda.

The annual race began on 11th December 2024, with up to 40 teams participating from around the world. The test of endurance involved rowing for 2 hours and sleeping for 2 hours, constantly, 24 hours a day for approximately 60 days. Each crew member needed to consume 6,000 calories and drink 10 litres of water per day, yet still expected to lose an average of 12 kg.

CyberLab was honoured to support Will and Adam in The Entrepreneur Ship ‘Lucy’, in an event that embodied the thrill of competition and the beauty of the open sea.

Worlds Toughest Row 2024

“We’d like to thank Cyberlab and the rest of our sponsors for their support, without which this challenge would not have been possible.

Neither of us are what you would call ‘seasoned athletes’, but we share a passion for water sports and adventure, so when the opportunity arose, we both jumped at the chance to participate.

I mean, more people have climbed Everest! Our strategy is to row fast, stay safe and, importantly, find reasons to laugh along the way.”

– Will Lomas & Adam Hardman

Culture and Wellbeing at CyberLab: What We Got Up To in 2025

How our Culture Prioritises a Healthy, Happy & Safe Workplace

At CyberLab, our people truly are our greatest asset, which is why their wellbeing is one of our top priorities. For us, it’s not just about a once-a-year check-in; it’s about consistently nurturing wellbeing at every stage of our people’s careers.

With the recent re-launch of our Culture Ambassador Team (CAs), a group of dedicated employees who volunteer their time to support our culture and wellbeing initiatives, we’ve been able to embed wellbeing into the heart of our People strategy.

The start of 2025 has marked an exciting new chapter, filled with meaningful initiatives that reflect our ongoing commitment to supporting our team’s health and happiness.

March Wellbeing Month

To kick things off, we introduced Wellbeing Month in March, a month-long initiative designed to shine a spotlight on various aspects of wellbeing. Every week throughout March, we hosted Wellbeing Wednesday, each focusing on a new theme selected based on feedback from our team.

Mental Wellbeing

The first theme was Mental Wellbeing, where we shared practical tips for maintaining mental health: from encouraging regular breaks to the importance of connecting with others, whether it’s friends, family, or a colleague you haven’t spoken to in a while.

We were also thrilled to welcome from Creative Wellness, who led a fantastic workshop on Stress Management.

Cinzia is a wellness expert and Yoga Teacher qualified in NLP (Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique). She provided insightful strategies on recognizing personal stress triggers and offered fun and practical exercises that can be easily integrated into our daily routines.

Financial Wellbeing

Our second theme focused on Financial Wellbeing, a topic I’m particularly passionate about. With the rising cost of living, it’s essential to equip our people with the knowledge and tools to navigate their financial futures.

We invited Jack Steele from Fawcett Wealth Management, who held voluntary one-on-one sessions with team members to discuss personal financial circumstances and offer tailored advice. Jack also led a group session, educating our people on investment strategies and financial planning.

Women’s Wellbeing

We also dedicated a theme to Women’s Wellbeing, and based on the feedback from our team, we placed a strong emphasis on Menopause. I was especially proud that one of our own, Fiona Kinsler, volunteered to lead a session on menopause, sharing her insights on how it affects women and how we as individuals and as a business can better support women going through perimenopause or menopause.

To continue the conversation, we hosted a Menopause Café, a follow-up session for women to share experiences and learn in a safe, supportive space. We’ve already planned another session to keep the dialogue going.

Men’s Wellbeing

Our final theme for March focused on Men’s Wellbeing, and we were honoured to have ANDYSMANCLUB join us to lead a powerful and thought-provoking session.

They shared the incredible work they’re doing to support men’s mental health and reminded us all #itsokaytotalk.

Step Challenge

As part of our ongoing commitment to supporting mental and physical wellbeing at work, we recently kicked off a Step Challenge in March, which was a fun and friendly initiative to get everyone moving and spark a bit of healthy competition.

The challenge invited our people to form teams of five, with the aim of racking up as many steps as possible over the course of the month. Whether it was lunchtime strolls, evening dog walks or weekend hikes, every step counted towards the team total.

The reward? The team with the highest collective step count at the end of March earned a well-deserved half-day of extra holiday, the perfect excuse to put their feet up after all that walking!

We had 25 participants in total, and together we covered a truly impressive distance, collectively walking 5,485,486 steps! Not only did the challenge encourage people to stay active, but it also created a brilliant buzz across the company and gave colleagues an extra reason to connect and support one another.

A huge well done to everyone who took part, and especially to our winning team, who stepped their way to the top!

A Strong Start with More to Come

Wellbeing is more than a checklist at CyberLab, it’s part of who we are. From workshops to walking challenges, we’re proud of the positive steps we’ve taken together so far in 2025.

Thank you to everyone who’s been involved. We’re excited to keep the momentum going as we continue building a culture where everyone can thrive.

CyberLab Steps Up for Movember 2025 with Teamwide Fundraising Drive

CyberLab Raise £750+ for Men's Charities

At CyberLab, we believe that culture is more than just words – it’s about action.

This Movember, our team embraced the challenge to support men’s mental health and cancer charities by doing what we do best: coming together for a cause. From growing moustaches to clocking an incredible 250,000 steps, every effort was a stride towards making a difference.

Thanks to the enthusiasm and commitment of our colleagues, we raised an impressive £750. These funds will help Movember continue its vital work in tackling mental health issues and cancers that affect men worldwide.

It’s a small step in the grand scheme, but one we’re proud to take as part of a global movement for change.

“Movember is more than a campaign – it’s a chance to show that we care about the wellbeing of our people and the wider community.”

– Mimi Rostron, People & Culture Manager

Movember isn’t just about moustaches – it’s about conversations, awareness, and community.

At CyberLab, we’re eager to be part of that greater good, showing that when we unite for a purpose, we can create meaningful impact.

Here’s to more initiatives that combine fun, fitness, and philanthropy!
